The team’s last venture was Implex Corp., where a novel biomaterial was developed, numerous patents issued, and over 30 unique spine, trauma, and reconstructive orthopedic products were commercialized, with the business being acquired for over $220 million.

Alex Khowaylo, CEO

As a successful entrepreneur, creating and selling medical device companies, Mr. Khowaylo provides broad experience in recognizing the value of technology and products. As senior executive, Mr. Khowaylo knows how to build effective organizations to maximize investor return while minimizing operating expenditures.

Previously, Mr. Khowaylo was a founder of Implex Corp, where he served as Chairman, CEO and President. Implex brought a novel biomaterial to market through coordinated testing, animal and clinical studies, as well as building a unique manufacturing facility. Zimmer acquired Implex in 2004, which resulted in $100 million upon closing and a total return of $220 million after three years.

Prior to that, Mr. Khowaylo co-founded Osteonics, which was acquired by Stryker. Under his leadership, Stryker Osteonics grew, globally, to the third largest hip and knee orthopedic implant company with end user sales of over $120 million. Mr. Khowaylo also co-founded Meditec Inc., a medical device company eventually acquired by 3M. Mr. Khowaylo has held technical positions at Howmedica, and has consulted to investment banking firms and other start-up companies.

Mr. Khowaylo received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Robert C. Cohen, Technology Officer

Mr. Cohen provides extensive experience in the strategic positioning of medical products and technologies for investment return. His technical engineering background brings in-depth knowledge to all phases of the product development cycle including research, design, intellectual property, manufacturing, physician evaluations, clinical studies and global regulatory.

Most recently, Mr. Cohen served as Senior Vice President Tissue Engineering for Osteotech Inc., a biologic science & human tissue processing company. Mr. Cohen had executive management responsibilities, including involvement with R&D, marketing, regulatory & clinical affairs, medical education, sales training and strategic business planning.

Previously, Mr. Cohen served as President of Zimmer Spine, with world-wide annual sales of $150 million at that time. Prior to that, he was General Manager, Vice-President R&D, of Zimmer Trabecular Metal Technology Inc. where he directed the dramatic growth of the NJ based operation resulting in sales of over $140 million.

Mr. Cohen served as Vice-President of R&D at Implex Corp where he was a key member of the Zimmer acquisition and integration team, heavily involved in all aspects of due diligence and the transition. Mr. Cohen also served as Director of Product Development at Stryker Osteonics, managing a large technical group focusing on all aspects of design for hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, and wrist reconstructive systems and specialty custom products.

Mr. Cohen has over 20 patents, numerous peer-review publications, and has presented globally at large medical conferences and hospital Grand Rounds.

Mr. Cohen holds a BS and Masters in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Management, all from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he currently holds a position on their Board of Visitors, as well as sits as Chairman of their Industry Relations Committee.

Michael P. McCarthy, Market Development Officer

Mr. McCarthy provides extensive strategic sales and marketing experience, gained from being a medical products distributor and serving in various executive corporate management capacities. He has brought numerous medical device technologies and novel products successfully into the healthcare marketplace. Through his direct interaction with sales representatives, physicians, and hospital purchasing administration, he has developed markets for new medical devices and generated sales revenues in relatively short timeframes.

Most recently, Mr. McCarthy served as Senior Vice President of Sales for Osteotech Inc., a biologic science & human tissue processing company where he was an integral part of restructuring the distributor sales force, almost doubling the size of the sales distribution network.

Previously, Mr. McCarthy served as President and CEO of Endius Inc, a minimally invasive surgery spinal device company. Under his leadership, the company was sold for $80 million, a multiple of 6 times sales. Mr. McCarthy also served as Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for Implex Corp where he recruited clinical sites and surgeons for the device’s investigational regulatory study and drove sales internationally by penetrating foreign markets.

Prior to Implex, Mr. McCarthy was founder/principal of Oxford Medical Inc., an independent sales distribution organization for the Johnson & Johnson orthopedic product portfolio. His distributorship grew from $1.5M to over $40 million in end-customer sales over an eight year period and was sold to J & J in 1998. Prior to Oxford Medical, Mr. McCarthy served in various corporate J & J Orthopedics sales and marketing positions including Director of Sales, Knee Product Marketing Director and various other sales and sales training roles.

Mr. McCarthy currently serves on the Board of Directors for two well known orthopedic companies.

Mr. McCarthy received his BS in Business Administration from Villanova University.

David S. Washburn, CFO and Operations

Mr. Washburn brings to Pipeline Biomedical strategic and tactical financial planning experience. Mr. Washburn has had direct operational involvement in growing early stage businesses from their inception, to increasing sales and valuation, and resulting acquisition. Mr. Washburn has established himself has a skilled presenter to Boards and potential acquisition targets.

Previously, Mr. Washburn was a retained consultant for Endius, a spinal medical device company. He functioned in the capacity of Chief Operating Officer where he was responsible for overseeing equity financing and assisting with acquisition negotiations. Endius sold for a six times multiple of sales.

Prior to that, Mr. Washburn served as a founder, COO, Vice-President of Finance & Operations and sat on the Board of Directors of Implex Corp. He directly oversaw several rounds of financing and was involved in the negotiation and due diligence of potential Implex acquirers.

Mr. Washburn also served as Vice-President of Operations of Stryker Osteonics, responsible for the finance, manufacturing operations, materials control, and human resources departments. Mr. Washburn started his career as a staff and senior auditor at Price-Waterhouse.
